The Scientist

Overview

Blue is a major antagonist in Rainbow Friends who first appears on Night 1 of Chapter 1. He appears in Night 1 of Chapter 1, and Hour 1 of Chapter 2.

Blue is the 1st Rainbow Friend to be introduced in the series.

Appearance and Physical Abilities

Appearance

Blue is a large, heavy royal blue[1] monster. Fittingly, he wears a yellow crown on his head. His arms are long and bulky when compared to his short legs. Pale blue drool hangs from the side of his mouth. Blue's right eye is round and dilated, however, the eye on his left has seemingly been replaced with a white button. In-game, he appears hunchbacked, walking with poor posture.

Blue's cartoon character counterpart is distinct from the monster present throughout the game. Identified as such via the merchandise[2][3], Happy Blue lacks current Blue's button eye and drool. This is presumably how he was originally intended to look, as in a photograph taken in 1991[4][5], the monster appears closer to his cartoon iteration. Every in-game depiction of Blue except the monster himself is drawn with two eyes and no saliva.

Notable exceptions include the plushie in Chapter 2's back lot[6] and the legendary box skin Blue In The Box. The reason for this is unknown, however the former may be a reference to the real blue plush[7] released a month prior to Chapter 2. The latter has the button, but lacks drool. This is the only instance Blue is depicted with this combination of features.

Physical Abilities

As expected, Blue is able to walk and run. His walking speed is slower than the players running speed, and so is his running speed. His running speed changed in Chapter 2, though, and he is as fast as the players.

As shown in Night 5 and in the 3rd Person jumpscare, Blue seems to have a lot of strength, as he can easily break through boards and is able to rip off the players head without much effort.

Night 1-4

Blue card

Happy Blue, the cartoon version of Blue.

After getting captured by the scientist, he tasks the players to help him rebuild his Block Tower. However, while they're collecting the missing blocks, they're getting hunted down by Blue.

Blue walkin

Him roaming Hemlock Woods.

During the first four nights, Blue is one of the monsters actively hunting for players. He usually wanders around, emitting distorted growls and grumbles. If a player enters Blue’s line of sight, he will begin to chase after them. Players can avoid him by hiding inside a box, locker, crouch space, or simply by outrunning him. When Blue loses sight of the player, he will run to where he last saw them go before pausing to think. Then, he will continue wandering. If the box is equipped out of his line of sight, even if he is actively in pursuit, Blue will be unable to find them. Attempting to equip the box while still in his line of sight, however, will not fool him - a red exclamation mark will appear, indicating he still knows the player is inside. This is only the case for the box - even if Blue watches someone crouch beneath an object or enter a locker, he is unable to reach them and loses interest. Crouching makes it slightly less likely for a player to be spotted, as they must be crouched in front of Blue's direct line of sight (as opposed to anywhere he can turn towards) in order to be seen.[8]

Night 5

Blue sad

Him sitting on the stage.

During the finale, he can be seen sitting idly in the middle of the stage. Running into one of the balloons scattered across the floor will cause it to pop and alert him. Blue gets up to chase the player who caused the disruption. Unlike during prior nights, Blue completely ignores players who didn't pop a balloon, rendering him completely safe to touch and walk into. On this night, all players lose access to their boxes, and there are no hiding places. The only way a chased player can escape is by running all the way up the ramp on the far side of the room and past the cake, where Blue cannot travel.

Chapter1ending

Him pushing himself back into the vents.

Once all players have reached the top of the ramp, a stray balloon drifts down onto a fork and bursts, alerting Blue and causing him to begin chasing everyone. After the players run through the exit door, it will close, locking Blue in the other room. He impatiently knocks and vocalizes, but he will not open the door until the ramp has been lowered. Once this happens, Blue will tear open the locked doors, bending the metal and pursuing the players through the vents. Blue also destroys multiple wooden planks in his path which the players must crouch under. This is the only time Blue is able to break through objects. Right before Blue is able to exit the vents and run outside of the building, he is crushed by a metal door and retreats, pushing himself back inside.

Hour 1-4

Night1 entering

Blue and Green entering Odd World.

After noticing that the Fleeing Group has entered Odd World, the Scientist releases Blue and Green from a garage to stop them from escaping.

Chapter 2 Teaser

Him seen roaming Odd World in the Chapter 2 teaser.

Similar to Chapter 1, he is one of the monsters chasing the players throught the first four nights. His behaviour didn't change, only However, he is notably faster, matching the speed of the player.

Hour 5

BlueThrone

Him sleeping in his throne..

Blue makes a minor appearance in the finale, being the second monster after Orange which players must turn to avoid. He appears to be running around, before noticing the cart and turning to pursue it. He narrowly misses if it leans right to avoid him. He will find every player in the cart if they head straight or left.[9]

At the end of Chapter 2, he is seen taking a nap on his throne while the Scientist wonders where he is.[10]

Difficulty and Stratagies

Information Difficulty
Similar to the other Rainbow Friends, Blue hunts down the players on the map. He's the most basic of all Friends, as he dosen't have any special mechanic. He roams the map for the players and starts chasing them if he sees them. Due to his slow speed, you can easily outrun him, making him weak in total. Very Easy

Information Difficulty
Blue's behaviour hasn't changed since Chapter 1, however, his running speed has increased which now matches the players one. This makes him slightly more dangerous, however, he's still easy to avoid. Easy - Medium

Strategies

  • In order to escape him, a player should break his line of sight before quickly equipping the box.
  • When the player opens the box when not hiding behind an object, Blue will continue to notice the player even if the player is behind him. This behavior is the same as Orange, Yellow and Cyan.
  • During Chapter 1, Blue is quite slow - he is much easier to outrun as opposed to Chapter 2.
  • In Chapter 2, Blue is capable of spotting you from large distances away. This, however, can buy you enough time to hide without the risk of getting caught.
  • For the first two seconds after Blue spots a player, he won't immediately kill them, as he needs to lock on. His speed will also be notably slower during this short period. This also applies for Yellow and Cyan aswell.
  • Blue cannot see players crouching in the fog present in Purple's Lair.
  • Blue is capable of climbing ladders. However, they may confuse him, causing him to take an alternative, unnecessarily long route in an attempt to surprise the player at the top. He mostly does this during Chapter 2.[11]

Trivia

Show/Hide Trivia

  • Blue seemingly has two castles - a separate one is included in each chapter.
  • Blue is the second tallest character, with 12 Studs of height (without crown) only losing by 0.1 studs to Green. With the crown, he is the tallest character.[12] The reason he doesn't appear as tall is due to his posture.
  • Blue's drool is referred to as "Slime" within the game files.[13]
  • Blue has 35 audio files associated with him. This includes vocalization, footsteps, and chase ambience.
  • In a deleted audio file, blue says the phrase "Found you!", albeit very distorted.[14]
  • A photo in Chapter 1’s map shows that Blue was friends with an unknown human.[4][5]
  • Blue is the only monster who is shown to have changed appearance.
  • Blue has multiple unused animation sequences that depict him with a more cartoonish animation style.[15]
  • Blue is the main mascot of the Rainbow Friends (both in-universe and in real life).
  • There appears to be destroyed animatronic versions of Green, Blue and Orange in one of the rooms during Cyan's chase sequence at the end of Chapter 2.
  • There is a working animatronic of Blue under the map of Chapter 2. It is only visible if the player falls out of the map, and never appears during normal gameplay.[16]
  • Despite his jumpscare showing him ripping players apart, it is implied he is capable of eating them. Several posters in Chapter 1 warn not to hug him, as "he might be hungry".[17]
