Purple is a secondary antagonist in Rainbow Friends who first appears on Night 3 of Chapter 1. It appears in Night 3 of Chapter 1, and Hour 1 of Chapter 2.

Purple is the 4th Rainbow Friend to be introduced in the series.

Appearance and Physical Abilities

Appearance

Purple's appearance is mysterious. Currently, only their long purple arms, round glowing eyes, and, jagged teeth are shown. There is no model of Purple's body anywhere in the files of either chapter.

The only instance where they are depicted in full is in a piece of merchandise. Phatmojo's Purple minifigure depicts them with an oblong head and four thin, jointed limbs. Their feet appear nearly identical to their hands, each having a thumb.[1][2] It is unclear if this design is official to the games.
Physical Abilities

Presumed by the sounds heard when its moving, Purple has a relatively fast moving speed. They can easily reach vents quickly in Chapter 1, and moves at the same speed as the players in Chapter 2

Purple can easily grab and pull players to it without much effort. After they pulled them, they bites him to death with the help of their sharp teeth.

Night 3-4

Purple leakingvent

Leaking vent.

While the Scientist is explaining the players what to do, he comments about the vents having started to leak. This "leak" only hints at a bigger threat...

Purple insidevent

Purple in the vents.

During Night 3 and 4, Purple will always be hiding in one of the vents. They can be identified by their glowing eyes watching from behind the grille. Their hands visibly poke out. During this time, the vents will be leaking water. In order to pass Purple without being found, players must be careful to walk on a small pathway through the water, marked by footprints. If the player carelessly walks across the water, Purple will instantly snatch them. If the player treads water while Purple is holding the vent cover, they are safe to walk on water (but more risky because Purple will again extend his hand outwards). This is only applicable for when Purple is actively stalking a vent, as an empty vent can be safely passed regardless if the player steps on the water. Audible metallic thumping noises indicate Purple is changing locations.

Night 5

Purple fall

The pit.

Purple makes a minor appearence in Night 5, jumpscaring the players if they fall into the pit in the vent chase.[3]

Purple insidelair

Purple inside its lair.

Hour 1-4

During Hour 1-4, Purple will hide in the fog present inside of their lair. If a player steps into the mist, after about two seconds, Purple will appear in one of the far corners of the maze. Usually, this is the far left. Once they are pursuing a player, their arms will be their only part visible through the clouds. Unlike the other monsters, Purple knows where the player is at all times regardless of objects blocking their line of sight. They also are capable of finding players hiding inside of a box. Upon contact, they will immediately snatch players, dragging them beneath the fog. Purple will never travel outside of the mist.

There are a few ways to avoid Purple. Standing on the rocks which protrude through the mist will render them unable to reach the player. Once they reach the rock, they will turn back and give up, retreating into one of the corners and vanishing. If the player steps back into the fog, they will attempt to follow them once more. Purple is only as fast as the player, so they can easily be outran.

Another way to avoid Purple is to crouch. Crouching while in the fog is essentially the same as hiding under an object, as no other monsters will be able to detect said player. While Purple cannot grab a player in this state, they will continue to closely follow them.[4] The issue with the way the fog functions is that any change to the player's elevation, even when crouched, may cause the game to register them as having left the safe zone. This makes climbing onto the rocks or even touching the hedges somewhat dangerous. Purple will sometimes be able to grab crouching players right when they take their first step onto the rock.[5] In order for a crouching player to guarantee their safety when leaving the mist, they should exit on flat ground.

1st Person

If a player is caught by Purple, they will flip open the grille, grab the player by the feet and pull them into the vent. Then, the entire screen will go black and all displays on the screen will disappear for a moment. Then, the screen display returns to normal but the screen is still black apart from Purple's glowing eyes and teeth. They will shake before lunging forward, killing the player using their teeth. This also occurs if a player falls off of the plank in Chapter 1's final hour.

3rd Person

The aforementioned grabbing is the only thing visible to other players. There is no 3rd person jumpscare if a player falls off the plank in the finale of Chapter 1.

1st Person

If a player is caught by Purple, they will reach up from the fog, grab the players shoulders, and drag them down into the fog. After this, the exact same as Chapter 1 occurs.

3rd Person

The aforementioned grabbing is the only thing visible to other players. There is no 3rd person jumpscare if a player falls off the plank in the finale of Chapter 1.

Difficulty and Stratagies

Information Difficulty
Similar to the other Rainbow Friends, Purple roams the map and hunts down the players. However, it doesn't actively pursue them and instead stays in the vents and pulls them down if they cross their vent. It can be seen from outside though, as their eyes and arms can be seen. It's easy to avoid, just take another route. Very Easy

Strategies

  • Listen for the sounds when Purple is moving, as they could enter a vent close to you and kill you instantly if not careful.
  • Take another route if you see Purple inside a vent, as it is quicker than waiting for them to leave.
    • Likewise if you see Green in the small passage in front of the vent that has Purple there.

Information Difficulty
Purple's behaviour has changed heavily since Chapter 1. It now stays in it's Lair and pursues the players that entered it. It can be avoided by standing on the rocks found inside the lair, or crouching. Very Easy - Easy

Strategies

  • Listen for Purples moving sound, as they spawn from either side of the lair.
  • You can easily avoid Purple by moving the opposite way of Purple spawn. It is unlikely they will catch up to you by doing so.
  • You can crouch inside Purple's Lair, as Purple can't kill you while in this state. Be careful to not touch the rocks in any way, as you die instantly if you do so.

Trivia

Show/Hide Trivia

  • Due to an oversight in the game's code, if Purple becomes visible in Chapter 2, at the same moment Blue is vocalizing, the noise will also come from Purple. [6]
  • Purple is the last Rainbow Friend to be introduced in Chapter 1 since Pink/Gooey and Yellow(Unused) went unused.
  • Purple is the only Rainbow Friend who completely changes their behavior between Chapter 1 and Chapter 2.
  • Purple is the only monster who only chases the players in a specific area.
  • Purple is the only Rainbow Friend that the Scientist never seems to directly acknowledge the presence or existence of.[7]
  • If a player falls out of bounds in Chapter 2, they will be able to view the models of Purple's hands and face.[8][9]
  • Purple is the only Rainbow Friend that doesn't use any textures.
  • Purple is the only rainbow friend who exhibits bioluminescence.[10]
  • As previously mentioned, Purple's minifigure is the only time their full body has been shown in any piece of official media. The pose is heavily referenced from a fanmade design used in media including a Friday Night Funkin' mod made by OreoMewza[11] and a Roblox game called "Become Tiky and everything else".
  • If a dead player sees a third-person Purple jumpscare, the player still can't see Purple's full model. They can only see players being pulled off the map.
